Qualitative Research Assignment

NFSC 429: Cultural Food

Skill Area: General Nutrition / Nutrition Education

Assignment Title: Postpartum Practices: How Do These Practices Affect Women of Other

Cultures

What I learned:  I learned that many other countries are more similar in postpartum care than the United States.  Many of the women practiced Hot and Cold foods, Confinement, and restriction of bathing for a 30 day period.  Some of the women stated that the pressure from the elders is strong enough to make them feel obligated to follow traditional culture.  Probably the most valuable thing I learned was that subtle offerings, movements, or gestures can mean somethings completely different, possibly disrespectful to someone from another culture.

Reflection to assignment:  I would like to do something like this again.  This assignment has heightened my curiosity to learn more about other cultures.  It was a fascinating experience.

Relevance to the profession:  Learning the basics of another culture can help bridge the communication with a patient / client.  A simple gesture of kindness such as ice water, a hand shake, or greeting someone may get you started on the wrong foot with a patient/ client.  It is better to understand a little about them before your assessment starts.
