School Lunch Program Observation

Assignment Title: Observation Report of An Elementary Student and School Lunch Program

What I learned:  I learned that school lunch isn't always about eating.  There is so much stimulation happening that kids are not very interested in food for nourishment.  Play and sharing are a key component during lunch time.  Also, that even though fresh fruits and vegetables are offered, they are not a priority to kids.

Reflection to assignment: Some schools are providing decent choices for students and others are serving a lot of processed foods with not much else to choose from.  Even when fresh fruits and vegetables are offered they often are not taken or thrown away. My particular student ate well for lunch, but she was also poked at, played with, and sharing food.

Relevance to the profession: Understanding the dynamics of how and what students choose to eat is a must, especially foodservice administration in the schools.
